Tiger Hill, known also as Surging Sea Hill, is a large hillock covering some 14100 square metres (over three acres) and is 36 metres (118 feet) in height. It is a popular tourist spot and is known for its natural beauty as well as its historical sites. The hill looks like a crouching tiger. There is a legend that claims that following the burial of King Helu, a white tiger appeared on the hill to guard it.
Climbing the hill, you will find a number of historical sites, some of which can be traced back over 2500 years to the founding of Suzhou. Although the hill is relatively small, it has a rich and interesting history.
These are just some of the highlights of what is to be found there. The most well-known site on Tiger Hill is the Yunyan Pagoda. The brick-structured tower is 47.5 metres in height and more than 6000 tons in weight. Since the Ming Dynasty, Yunyan Pagoda has been suffering from issues with its foundation and hence has been leaning toward the north-east. Now it is leaning 2.48 degrees. The pagoda is also called the "Leaning Tower of the East ".
The most attractive and mysterious site on Tiger Hill is the Sword Pond. There are many valuable swords underwater at the bottom of the pond. King Helu and his many treasures were rumored to be buried under the Sword Pond. The Sword Pond is about 45 metres’ wide and about 6 metres’ deep. The pond never dries up and is actually a spring that flows with clear and drinkable water all year long.
Every year from March, there is a spring flower fair at Tiger Hill. There is also usually an autumn temple fair before or after Chinese Mid-autumn Festival. In winter, a Chinese Spring Festival fair is held every year.
